Password Security

Alert message sent 15/05/2019 12:02:00

Information sent on behalf of Hampshire Constabulary

Dear Resident,

Please see the below information relating to Cyber Security and consider whether the passwords you use could make you vulnerable to a breach.

The
National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is urging people to apply steps to stay safe online after results of the UK Cyber Survey exposed exploitable gaps in their personal security knowledge. The NCSC recommends using 3 random words as passwords.

The NCSC also published separate analysis of the 100,000 most commonly re-occurring passwords that have been accessed by third parties in global cyber breaches. The most popular passwords include:
  • 123456 (23.2m accounts)
  • 123456789 (7.7m accounts)
  • querty (3.8m accounts)
The list was created after breached usernames and passwords were collected and published on Have I Been Pwned by web security expert Troy Hunt. The website allows people to check if they have an account that has been compromised in a data breach.

For further information and advice, visit the NCSC website via the below link -
