Crash for Crash Warning

Alert message sent 05/04/2019 09:32:00

Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Dear Citizen

Police in Walsall are investigating a ‘crash for cash’ fraud which resulted in the victim handing over a large sum in cash to cover the cost.

The 87 year-old victim was driving home along Sutton Road, Walsall, during the morning of Thursday 7th March when he was involved in an alleged collision with a left-hand drive dark coloured medium sized vehicle displaying the foreign registration number BE7650.  Upon stopping to speak to the other driver, he has found what he supposed to be damage to his vehicle, however this has since been confirmed as a smear of paint which has washed off.  The two men occupying the offending vehicle told the victim that they were French, that their car was on hire and that they required him to compensate them for the £3000 deposit they had paid.  He was understandably reluctant to pay without notifying his insurance company, at which the offenders have offered to call his insurers on their mobile phone.  They have then handed the phone to their victim who has been told by an unknown man that, for a number of reasons, paying the amount requested in cash was the simplest option and that he would be reimbursed within 21 days.  The victim has then been driven to his bank by the offenders to withdraw the cash which he has handed over.  It was only on contacting his insurance company at a later date, and being told that they had no knowledge of the incident, that he realised he had been duped.

Police Investigator Lisa Lacey said, “Usually crash for cash, deliberately causing a road traffic collision, is aimed at defrauding insurance companies.  The innocent driver being tricked into handing over money makes this crime all the more despicable.

“Please be on the look out for the offenders’ vehicle.  Being left-hand drive, it should stand out.”

Anyone who has any information which may assist the investigation is asked to contact the police via Live Chat at between 8am to midnight, call 101 anytime or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, quoting crime reference number 20WS/66162K/19.
