Off-Duty Officers Detain Suspected Burglar

Suspected thieves got more than they bargained for on Thursday 7th March, when two off-duty officers, also a married couple, detained a man near B&Q on Skippers Lane Industrial Estate in Middlesbrough.

Redcar Detective Constable Iona Jones and her husband, Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Inspector Rob Jones, gave a whole new meaning to ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ when Iona noticed suspicious activity whilst driving to the gym at 6am.

Iona spotted a wheelbarrow in the road and two men climbing over a 15 foot fence as she drove along Skippers Lane. She was first on the scene and got out of her vehicle and shouted over to the men. Inspector Jones followed and the quick-thinking officers detained one of the men.

The second male made off from the scene.

Soon after, another off duty officer, Police Staff Investigator, Rick Lovick, pulled over and helped the Joneses keep the man detained until police arrived at the scene.

It is believed the men were carrying a quantity of suspected stolen gardening equipment.

The suspect, aged 40, was arrested on suspicion of burglary dwelling and theft and has been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
Officers are currently trying to trace the second male and enquiries are ongoing. The suspected stolen items were returned to B&Q.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101 quoting event number 038683.
