Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Not all burglars will break into your home, some will trick or con there way in. this is known as distraction burglars, or bogus callers. there aim is to mislead you, distract your attention to get into your home and take your belongings, cash or car.
Most people who turn up at your home will be genuine. You should always be aware when someone you don't know calls at your door, they are convincing and persuasive, this is there job.
Bogus callers can claim to be from police, water board, council, electric and gas. They can be smartly dressed ,or in some kind of uniform.
They may be workmen who need water or calling trying to get you to pay for unnecessary repairs wanting money upfront.
Beware if they try and move your focus to another room or trying to get you to leave the room.
A few tips to help keep you safe and secure, fitting and using a door chain or spy hole. This helps identify the caller before opening the door. asking for them to produce an official identity badge and they can not produce or it looks defaced in any way or reluctant to show you then don't let them in. A lot of companies will ring to make an appointment and allow you to set up passwords so that you know who they are.
A genuine caller will not mind you closing the door for a couple of minutes while you check their id and most will be happy to assist you in making more enquiries and return on a date for another time.
