Scams and Cybercrime

Alert message sent 29/01/2019 13:42:00

Information sent on behalf of West Mids Police

Scams and cybercrime are being reported more and more so over the course of the next few days I will be doing a bit of a series of safety tips which I hope you will find useful!

Today - Doorstep scams

These take place when someone tries to scam you out of money on your doorstep or tries to enter your home. These scammers are not typically pushy and can often be very friendly; so, if you are not expecting any visitors be vigilant when you answer the door to a stranger especially if you live alone

There are different types of doorstep scams

Rogue traders – who call to offer a service you don’t particularly need often, claiming that
they have noticed something wrong with your property
Bogus officials – claiming to be from your utility company – always check their ID – if they
are real they won’t mind waiting for you to do this
Fake charity collections – claiming to be from a charity asking you to donate money or goods
– again check ID
Made-up consumer surveys – asking you to complete a survey so that they can get your
personal details
Hard luck stories – asking for money for gas meter, bus fare, medication and the like

Some tips to help combat doorstep scammers

Don’t let anyone in if you are not expecting their visit
Don’t feel pressured into handing over money or signing anything at the door
Always check ID – a genuine person will not mind you contacting their company but never use
the contact details they give you
Never share your PIN or hand over your bank card to anyone
Call the Police – 101 if you’re not in immediate danger or 999 if you feel threatened or in
Take time to think about any offer even if it is a genuine one
Don’t feel embarrassed to say “No” to people or ask them to leave

In the meantime, please remain vigilant and report anything you think is suspicious to us
