Energy Supplier Brexit Scam

Alert message sent 29/01/2019 08:45:00

Information sent on behalf of Dorset Alert

Good Morning,

We have become aware of residents in the Ferndown Areas being visited by persons claiming to be from their Electric Company. They appear to be targeting older residents claiming to be doing “checks on OAP’s in preparation for Brexit”.

The persons have been polite and shown ID when they arrive. During their visit they have asked to see the resident’s meters as well as their Bank Statements saying they need to check what payments have been made. In a few cases a call was made to the “head office” where the resident spoke to a female who asked for further information including Date of Birth.

Several residents have contacted their energy suppliers and have been told that these persons do not work for them and have highlighted it as a scam.

Please remain vigilant when answering your door, do not trust ID alone, if you are not expecting someone, politely ask the person to wait, close the door and call your service provider using a number from a trusted place (Your last bill or the company website) should the person not be associated with the company call the Police on 999. Where safe record any details of the person/s and vehicle/s that you can see.

If you believe you have been a victim of a scam and the persons are no longer present, call Dorset Police on 101 or report online at www.dorset.police.uk
