As Local Policing Commander for Torbay and South Devon I write to express my appreciation for the exceptional joint agency collaboration during Storm Emma.
As Silver Commander I witnessed extraordinary dedication and commitment from police officers, police staff, partner agencies, volunteers and communities, who have pulled together; going above and beyond to meet the challenges they have faced, to save life, to protect the public and safeguard those who have been most vulnerable. I have witnessed outstanding selflessness, professionalism and dedication in exceptionally challenging and dangerous conditions. I have heard accounts of staff across all agencies working exceptionally long hours, walking miles to get to work and sleeping on office floors in order to maintain critical services across Torbay and Devon. I know of volunteers setting up rest centres, co-ordinating stranded motorists, searching through snow drifts, providing food and shelter to those stranded or without homes within our communities.
In the face of adversity we have seen the exceptional work of the statutory partnerships, voluntary organisations and felt a level of community resilience and spirit that should make us all proud of Torbay and Devon. We have demonstrated the strength of our relationships and the importance of investing in and maintaining these relationships as the fundamental basis of policing and community safety.
Most importantly we have seen the strength or our people and I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to your staff and volunteers for their exceptional contribution.
