Scam warnings

Alert message sent 01/02/2018 22:20:00

Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

Dear members, please be aware of a few new scams that have been brought to our attention recently:

- 2018 Microsoft New Email Update

There is no such update. Therefore, Microsoft users who have received the email message, which claims that the processing of incoming emails on their accounts will be stopped since they have refused to upgrade their accounts, is a phishing scam being sent by cybercriminals to steal Microsoft Hotmail, Live or Outlook usernames and passwords. The fake email message tricks the recipients into visiting a phishing website where they will be asked to sign into their accounts, but any attempt to sign-in to the phishing website will result in their account credentials being sent to the cybercriminals behind the phishing email message.

- Confirmation email scam – recently we have become aware of a scam email that imitates confirmations of ferry bookings with links to download.

Remember that this email scam is aimed at people who actually recently made some ferry booking. If you are one of those people, please ignore the email and call directly to your booking/ferry company to check if there is any problem with your booking and never use a contact telephone number from any scam email.

Please! never click on web-address, attachment or picture in those emails as they can lead to a rogue website that could affect your computer.

Stop email / telephone scam :

Financial Fraud Action UK suggest you stop and consider whether the situation is genuine – to STOP and THINK if what you’re being told really makes sense.

- 'HMRC' tax refund scam emails and texts are doing the rounds yet again. Simple: HMRC never contacts customers who are due a refund by email. It only ever sends such a letter by post.

Please always be alert when you are contacted by phone, email or in person.

If you have concerns it is always best to contact the organization on the telephone number or the email that you know is correct.

If you are really not sure, you can always chat with us “Torbay Neighbourhood Watch”. If there is not a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in your area we can help you to create one.

If you have any questions, why not come along to our Quiz Night on Monday 26th February 2018 at Livermead House Hotel - 7 pm - £10 per person includes sausage/scampi and chips.

Please book soon as spaces are filling up.
