Telephone scam

Alert message sent 17/01/2018 17:12:00

Information sent on behalf of Devon and Cornwall Police

Dear resident

Please be aware that we have received reports of a potential telephone scam. Callers who say they are from BT Openreach are making contact with residents in the Crediton area. They have been trying to tell people that every time they log onto their computers, they are being infected.  If allowed to continue the call they may ask for passwords to 'help' you by accessing your computer remotely or they may ask for bank details for payments to fix the problem.

These calls appear to be coming from local phone numbers in an attempt to fool people into thinking it is a legitimate call.

Please do not give these callers any personal details and end the call as soon as possible. If by some coincidence you are experiencing problems with your computer, use the official phone numbers/contacts from your service provider and be sure the phone line is clear before making another call.

You may wish to contact the Telephone Preference Service which can help eliminate some nuisance calls via tpsonline.org.uk.

If you know someone that may benefit from knowing this information, please speak to them as soon as possible. Not everyone has access to this system and we need to work together to protect others, particularly the elderly and vulnerable.

If you have any queries please reply to this email.
