Business Burglaries

Alert message sent 06/12/2017 10:02:00

Information sent on behalf of Cambridgeshire Constabulary

Dear E-coppers,

Littleport has seen a few Business Burglaries recently and as such here is some Business Security Advice/ nine of the most common security considerations used by criminals:
1) Access to your premises: Is it monitored? (e.g CCTV, intruder alarm or staff). If it is shared access, is there an agreed security protocol in place? Which staff member has responsibility for site security?
2)Your perimeter and boundary: Do you have a secure boundary around your premises at least 1.8m high? Are boundary fences/walls/hedges in good condition? Are there any blind spots where someone wouldn't been seen?
3)External Lighting: Are all areas well-lit and lights in full working order? Are you using motion activated lighting? Are there any dark areas where an intruder could hide?
4)CCTV: Do you have a system? Does it cover the perimeter, all door and windows, exit points and parking areas? Is it monitored by staff or just a recording system? Is there a protocol in place to regularly review CCTV footage?
5)Intruder Alarms: Do you have alarms set for the contacts on exits and sensors within the building, especially areas where high value items/safes are stored? Do all staff know what to do when an alarm is activated? Are your alarms monitored by an independent company? Do you review/procedures/protocols after a false activation?
6)Storage: Do you only store what is absolutely necessary? Are your storage areas secure with strong locks? Do you limit the visibility of valuables?
7)Entrances and exits: Are they well maintained, locked and alarmed? Are there clear signs to explain the rules regarding permitted access?
8) Cash and Valuables: Do you limit what is kept on the premises overnight? Are valuables security marked? Are they visible from outside the premises? Are they stored in a secure place?
9)Training: Is security covered in your staff induction? Is security covered during regular staff updates? Are staff aware how to report security issues?
If you have identified any areas that need attention, act upon them as soon as possible. You can get more information from or contact your local Crime Reduction Officer, Sue Loaker on 101.
Kind Regards,
PCSO Emma Graves.
