The purpose of this message is to inform you an elderly resident in Maryport was contacted via her landline telephone on Wednesday 22nd November 2017. The caller claimed to be employed by BT and stated that he was calling about nuisance calls and he wanted to verify the resident’s bank details. This call came from a 020 number and appears to be linked to a national telephone scam.

Members of the public are asked to remain alert to such phone calls and advised NOT to provide any of their personal or financial details, and not to be afraid to hang up such calls.

Here is some basic information on Crime Prevention:

Please make sure that all windows and doors, especially those on the ground floor, are shut and locked. If the window acts as an escape route in a fire situation then please make sure this is not compromised. In addition please ensure that all valuables especially handbags, cash and mobile phones are secured at night within your home and are not on view which would enable easy access to them for an intruder. You can register to Cumbria Community Messaging for crime alerts and other information at: www.cumbriacommunitymessaging.co.uk
