A number of people in the East Devon area have recently had their wallets/purse stolen from doctor’s surgeries. They later receive a call purporting to be the bank asking for a pin number and then withdraw cash from the account. Please do not share your pin numbers over the phone. This is a scam. You should never give out your bank account or credit card details unless you are certain of who you are dealing with. If you have already given the fraudsters this information, tell your bank immediately.
If you have a call from your bank or a similar organization you should call them back but from another phone line, such as a mobile phone or landline, or wait at least five minutes before doing so.
Remember that genuine bank staff will never ask for the PIN for your bank or credit card.
If you receive an unexpected phone call like this put the phone down. If you believe the phone call to be genuine, phone your bank back on a publicly listed phone number.
You should report these incidents on the Action Fraud website, or you can call them on 0300 123 2040 (Please note this number will be charged at your normal network rate). They are open Monday to Friday 09:00 - 18:00.
