Police Scotland - Bogus Telephone Calls

Alert message sent 03/11/2017 14:02:00

Information sent on behalf of Scottish Borders Council

Police in the Scottish Borders are issuing a warning to the public after an elderly female was contacted by a male attempting to defraud her of money.

The female received a phone call from a male with an accent which was believed to be Glaswegian.  The male stated that an attempt had been made to fraudulently remove funds from her account.  The male requested that she attend at her local branch immediately and transfer money into a different account.

The female stated that she would need to consult her daughter first and did not disclose any details.  The female then received a second call, the number that appeared on the screen was the same number that is detailed on the back of her bank cards.  Please be aware fraudsters and scammers are able to spoof authentic bank telephone numbers.

Fortunately in this instance no money was lost but please remember never divulge any personal details over the phone, even if it appears the call originated from a legitimate number.  Banks will not ask you to divulge personal details over the phone.
