We've been made aware of a scam where people are sent a letter saying that a website has been set up in their local area to record comments about antisocial problems.
It promises these comments would subsequently be e-mailed to all registered members of the local group to inform them what the problems were and what was being done to resolve them - for example “Dog owners are not clearing up after their dogs so I reported it to the Dog Warden who has put up notices to remind owners of the consequences” or "drug needles found under the bridge, police are patrolling the area”.
The locals are asked to register online to the scheme and provide their email address so that they can make their own inputs and also be kept up to date with the issues raised by their neighbours. Every few months one of the area groups is supposedly awarded a prize for their public spiritedness!
The scam appears to be in awarding the prize. Members are told, for example, that their group has won £10,000 and they can claim their share by giving the scheme manager their bank details. Clearly they never receive any money but they have put themselves at risk of fraud. Please can you forward this to your local members to make them aware and remember never give your banking or personal details out unless you trust the person you are giving them to.
Thanks for reading and sharing.
