Telephone Scam Alert

Alert message sent 25/11/2016 17:37:00

Information sent on behalf of Dorset Alert

A Thornford resident has received a telephone call from a person claiming to be from Microsoft. The person pretending to be an employee of Microsoft said that they had incorrectly charged the resident’s bank account for £260 because of a windows operating system up-date.
Unfortunately for the bogus caller, the resident was aware of this common telephone scam and after pointing out that they in fact had a Mac Computer which does not use windows software they hung up.
Typically, if this call had continued the bogus caller would have asked for the resident’s bank account details on the pretext of reimbursing the fictitious money, prior to actually stealing money from the resident’s account. Other scams similar in nature of this one may involve a person claiming to be a court bailiff who has been tasked with reclaiming a debt, or someone pretending to be from the Inland Revenue offering a tax refund.

The thing all these scams and others have in common are that they are an unsolicited telephone call, and the caller will eventually ask for your bank details and possibly other details like your passwords or date of birth.

You can be prepared for calls of this nature by keeping yourself informed about various types of fraud and how to avoid them by visiting the Action Fraud website here:
