Bank account scam

Alert message sent 11/03/2016 13:51:00

Information sent on behalf of Lincolnshire Police

There have been several incidents reported to the police where people have taken phone calls from someone claiming to be from the bank they have accounts at. The caller then discusses an on-going investigation at the bank where a bank employee is suspected of fraud at the branch and has been taking money from accounts.

Having set up the reason for the call and suggested that their money is at risk, they try to get the account holder (victim) to transfer their money in to a safe account, which is actually an account the person calling can access. The victim is told not to contact anyone as it might alert the bank employee of the investigation.

By doing this the caller obtains the money from the victim and keeps the transaction secret from family and friends, this means they can try the same scam again either on the same victim or another person.

Due to individuals who have been targeted reporting this sort of incident it is possible to highlight the scam and alert people to the risk of discussing any details with unknown callers, either on the phone or at the door step.

If you have any doubt regarding banking and your finances go to your local branch and discuss the details with a member of staff in the bank. You will never be asked for passwords or PIN details and the branch will know you account number from your name and address.

If you think you, family or friends have been the victim of a banking fraud or similar, please call 101 to report it.
